Detailed Description
Most volunteers gathered around 630AM at the bottom of Motorway, pedaling up around 645AM. Volunteers picked up trash along the road, collecting trash from the roadside, drainages, creek, and pullouts as they pedaled up to Four Corners.
Darshan, Joseph, Adam, Jack, Andrew and Juan were the last group to depart the trailhead. At the first bend after the road turns to dirt (33.74931179166467, -117.54796572414558), they found a dump site where several full size heavy-duty trash bags were dumped. Additionally, there were several large containers of used motor oil, a tire and construction-related trash. The group painstakingly scrambled down the hillside and into the bushes to retrieve as much trash from this dump site as they could.
Keith Eckstein and Jeff Black drove up in Keith’s red Tacoma to help with hauling trash and supporting the riders. Keith and Jeff arrived at the dump site as the group was gathering the trash. They helped load it into Keith’s truck, which completely filled his truck bed. There was more trash that wouldn’t fit, so Keith and Jeff drove back down to Silverado to empty his truck bed at the Silverado Canyon Clean-Up, an annual event sponsored by Waste Management. Luckily this event occurred on our clean up, as there was more trash to haul out.
Meanwhile, the bike crews continued pedaling up Maple Springs Road. Juan, in the trailing group, found another pullout littered with party trash and scrambled down the hillside to collect it.
Front runners trickled into Four Corners. As they waited for everyone to arrive, they collecting several bags of litter from the surrounding area.
The shuttle group, Jim, Rick, Drew and Brian, caught up with the the trailing group at the same time they encountered a disabled truck completely blocking the road. Since the road was blocked, the shuttle group found a parking area a little lower than planned and began biking up.
Eventually, everyone arrived at Four Corners. Most everyone continued on to summit Modjeska Peak, including those that originally didn’t plan to summit. Victory speeches and victory MnMs were shared on the summit.
Upon return to Four Corners, the group was happy to see Keith and Jeff, who supported all the riders with cold beverages and grapes. Most riders continued on to Motorway, while a few returned down Maple Springs Road.
This particular clean up was incredibly impactful. Cleaning up an entire dump site was not planned, but because we had so many volunteers including truck support, we were able to tackle this big project in addition to the planned litter pickup along the road and at Four Corners.
